In line with our pastoral care policies, permission to leave school before the regular times can only be given at the written request of parents. At such times children must be collected by an adult.

Corridor and playground supervisors start at 8.45am. Pupils, therefore, should not be in school before this time unless under the supervision of Sleepy Hollow Day Care staff.

At the end of school pupils  walking home should use the crossing patrol points outside school and on the Main Street.  Pupils should cross only at these points.

Parents who bring their children to school by car must be careful not to park in a way that will obstruct school buses or the fire station entrance. For safety reasons, parents are asked not to bring their cars into the school grounds unless special permission is obtained.

The school as extensive hard and grass play areas which are fully used during break and lunch-times and during after school activities. We have separate P1-3 and P4-7 playgrounds laid out with brightly coloured permanent games marking and a team of primary 7 playground leaders sets up small games equipment daily for lunch-time play.

The extensive grass areas are being developed for outdoor environmental work, with several bird areas, a habitat pile (mini-beasts) and a tree conservation area.

Homework

The school sees a value in children engaging in homework as a means of revising work done in class, in discovering information unavailable in school, in involving parents positively in their children’s studies and in the development of good work habits.

Against this we must balance each child’s need for recreation and the development of private interests and hobbies and so the amount of homework should not exceed that which can be done in

30 minutes at Key Stage 1
45 minutes at Key Stage 2
assuming proper application and no distractions.

Homework will be given each day from Monday to Thursday and will normally consist of reading and the learning of spelling and number facts plus a short piece of written work for the older children. Homework assignments are recorded each day in your child's homework diary

Parents are asked to sign each child’s work when it has been completed to a satisfactory standard.
Part of the value of homework is the individual attention a child receives from his/her parent, so help from parents is encouraged.

We would request that parents when signing the homework should write “Help needed” if they have given a lot of assistance with homework. In this way parents can alert the teacher to their child’s needs.
In addition, parents should inform the class teacher if homework takes an excessive amount of time. In this way parents can alert the teacher to their child's needs

Please note:

The setting of homework may be relaxed for special occasions and close to holidays.

Children in years 6 and 7 who opt to do the transfer procedure tests will receive homework at weekends.

Children who are receiving additional teaching from the special needs teacher will have a small amount of homework at weekends.
